Availability: Rare. The Great Eastern was a steam ship built in London and launched in 1858. It was the largest ship ever built to that date, with a capability to take 4,000 passengers from England to Australia without refueling. The ship served for several years as a passenger liner between Great Britain and North America before being converted to a cable-laying ship and laying the first lasting transatlantic telegraph cable in 1866. It was most probably this latter feat that the jar was meant to commemorate. ET Whitehead was a dealer in lamps & glassware in Philadelphia in the 1860's.
