This version, with MASONS embossed in a straight line instead of an arch, is considered to be the very first in the so-called "Crowleytown" series of Mason style jars and the first to employ John Mason's patented screw cap. The sharply-squared heel shape was an overlooked design flaw in these earliest jars, which led to many examples incurring heel damage during normal use.
