The jar is believed to have been displayed at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia in 1876 by the proprietors of the ES Morris & Co as part of promoting his business in imported goods from Liberia. And then permanently in the Liberian Display at the Exhibition Building for the ensuing few years thereafter. The jar is very similar in shape and style to some of the known Salesman Sample fruit jars of the period such as The Gem.
