An aqua civil-war era wax sealer quart that is embossed on the sloping shoulder: "UNION No 1". Beautiful condition with sparkling glass that displays a whittled effect in the sloping upper section. The grooved ring was formed manually while the glass was still hot by downward pressure on the mouth. The sheared mouth was then finished by grinding. No damage or stains including an excellent ground mouth with very little nicking. Comes with the rare original sheet iron cap, which is a unique form to this series of jars, and extremely scarce to find. The cap has some rust but still in solid condition. Base: unmarked.

An early aqua half gallon that is embossed on one side in a circular arrangement: "D.I. HOLCOMB PATENTED DEC 14TH 1869" and on the other side: "DICTATOR FROM HOLWEG & REESE INDIANAPOLIS, IND". Sparkling glass throughout with no damage or stains with the exception of two shallow flakes on the outer mouth. The mouth has a flat groove style finish for a Dictator metal or glass lid and wire clip, which are missing. Base: "W McCully & Co Pittsburgh Pa". This extremely rare jar is one of only two known examples, the other being a quart sized specimen.

This item is not from the Robinson museum, but is a fine addition to the auction. This jar and rare lid were recently discovered in a house attic in eastern NY state.
An aqua half gallon "MASONS (Shield) UNION" jar with an extremely rare correct original wide mouth zinc cap. The cap is in very good shape with all lettering clearly readable and the original enameled iron liner in place and in good shape. The lid is impressed into the top: "MASONS UNION PATD FEBy 15 1859 ALWAYS SAFE" and with the Union Shield logo with stars and stripes. The side lug was formed in the lid by stamping out from the inside and then filling the depression with solder. The top edge of the lid is slightly flattened along one side. There are no holes, or splits, or weak spots of any kind. The lid tightens perfectly and snugly onto the threads of the jar. The jar itself is in good shape with clean glass. There is a bubble in the mouth that was cut into during the grinding process and has subsequently filled up with canning residue. Base: "27". Virtually all known examples of this jar have been collected without a lid, because only one other example of this lid was known in this size.

The glass displays some great character with tons of crude seed bubbles and a finely whittled appearance. Comes with the original zinc band with 2 wrench lugs and the original matching color insert with embossed berries. Sparkling condition with no damage or stains. The ground rim is rough as shown. There is a manufacturer's pot stone in the back with radiations. The zinc band is solid but has a repaired split and is taped inside to permit tightening on the jar. Base: a backwards-embossed "11".
