The jar was blown in 1877 at Hemingray's Covington, KY glass plant site, from their patented Black Glass (opaque olive black). This particular example is the finest we've seen, with good strong embossing, and displaying an excessive amount of seed bubbles throughout, that are visible at the surface all over the jar. Also is crudely fashioned with some great character in that the body is not perfectly round. Shiny condition with no damage or stains, other than flaking around the ground mouth as shown. Base: "10". We sold this jar originally in the year 2000 in the dispersal of a fine Southern NJ collection, and it has now returned to the market. An outstanding piece of early Hemingray glassware.

Buyer: Bogs 62
Price: $1,025.00
An early aqua quart "Crowleytown" Mason. Crisp embossing and in good condition with no damage or stains, except for some deposits under the bottom of the jar. Flat base and a sheared and ground mouth. Comes with an early unlined zinc cap that is impressed on top in a circular arrangement "TRADE MARK SMS CO ALWAYS RELIABLE", with 2 soldered-on lugs on top. At first I thought perhaps the top lugs had been added, since this is not normal for an SMS cap, but on close inspection there is no trace whatsoever of the usual vertical side lug on this lid. Therefore it may be a rare variation. The cap is in good solid condition and nicely flat across the top. The threaded mouth of the jar has a bubble that was ground into during the making with some whitish canning juices inside. A great looking old Crowleytown jar.
